Meta’s Reality Labs Research group (RLR) is the worlds leading AR/VR research lab, exploring and inventing the future of computing. RLR is tasked with delivering discontinuous technological leaps, both near and long term, that have the potential to reshape the way humans interact with each other and with the digital world.
This role requires the ability to look 5-10 years into the future to see what needs to happen and what could be possible given high-risk, high-reward research, to do the research to see if those goals truly are possible and valuable, and then to execute to prototype, incubate, and transfer the results into products that can change the world. The focus of our team is computer graphics research and efficient synthesis of high quality images for AR/VR head mounted displays. Our current research areas include custom graphics hardware, rendering algorithms for AR/VR, ray casting, machine learning based image synthesis, and differentiable and inverse rendering.
As the Director of Graphics for RLR you will have the very rare opportunity to enable, support, inspire, and lead a diverse team of the worlds leading graphics experts to develop a novel graphics pipeline delivering on the mission of defining the future of visual computing.
Responsibilities
• Lead, manage, mentor, inspire, enable, and grow a world-class graphics research team.
• Work with leadership to establish and drive the vision, strategy, and roadmap for developing a novel graphics pipeline for AR/VR.
• Establish a research/incubation/productization roadmap and strategy.
• Formulate and administer policies for IP publication, patenting and maintaining trade secrets.
• Be deeply involved in the technical direction and development of the overall roadmap.
• Influence to achieve buy-in of the graphics team and critical stakeholders.
• Lead graphics research projects in AR and VR that span cross-functional teams.
• Collaborate with other teams, researchers and engineers to develop concepts that advance the entire product pipeline.
• Engage with cross functional partner teams within RLR that benefit from graphics technologies and define cooperations and joint roadmaps when alignment is high.
• Organize and facilitate transfer of technology between RLR and product teams.
• Recruit world-class talent and provide mentorship to team members.
• Grow and enrich academic collaborations for research influencing and growing talent pipelines.
Minimum Qualification
• 5+ years of experience managing a graphics research team.
• Experience leading a team in technology transfer of new inventions and innovations.
• Technical knowledge across topics, including computer graphics, machine learning, and computer graphics.
• Subject matter expertise, as demonstrated through publications, patents, and shipped products.
• Interpersonal skills with the experience collaborating well and work across teams.
• MS/PhD in Computer Science, Computer Graphics or related field or relevant experience.
Preferred Qualification
• Deep real-time graphics experience.
• Familiarity with hardware and software co-design.
• Familiarity with IP strategy.
